German in Ireland
On January 1st 2014, a German with a passion for Ireland became a German living in Ireland. For me, it was never a question of whether to emigrate. It was only a matter of when I would find the courage to do it. I had fallen completely in love with the island during my first stay as a student in 2008.
It was a leap of faith into the (almost) unknown. I started from scratch at the age of 31, leaving a comfortable, established lifestyle in Hamburg behind.
Whilst living in Ireland is my dream come true, it also brought an eye-opening reality check. Many things fell into place for me when I moved here. Even so, I see Ireland through a different lens now—one that looks beyond the magnificent green scenery dotted with cute little sheep. I look past the picturesque cottages, cosy pubs, and the always friendly, open-minded Irish people. I see Ireland as my home now, with all the ups and downs it entails. There are no regrets, for sure, but there have been many challenges along the way!
